Invitation to the Conference on Nano-Safety, 22.-24. April 2009, Ljubljana, Slovenia, Hotel Slon, Slovenska cesta 34, 1000 Ljubljana

PRELIMINARY INVITATION to participate in the NANO SAFETY CONFERENCE
22. to 24. April 2009, Ljubljana, Slovenia

Nanoparticles have become a part of our everyday life, since nanotechnologies have an extremely wide range of applications like new materials, food, communication and information technologies, medicine, environmental technologies, leisure industry, cosmetics etc., to name just the most important ones. But besides huge benefits and great business opportunities nanotechnologies have brought to the societies and their economies, they have also opened completely new safety concerns, which are becoming an emerging issue. The big question is, whether the consideration of safety aspects and the development of suitable safety practices and required regulation, are going hand in hand with the expanding development of nanotechnology application fields.

For this reason the Ministry of health / National Chemicals Bureau of the Republic of Slovenia and Umweltbundesamt from Austria, as partners in the EU-funded Twining Project Chemical Safety 3, have decided, in cooperation with OECD and European Commission to organise a CEE regional Conference on Nanosafety, to be held in Ljubljana from 22nd to 24th of April 2009. The main goal of the conference is to bring together interested stakeholders from Central and Eastern Europe, but also from elsewhere to exchange information on different policy approaches concerning the safety of nanomaterials as well as on new developments in the field of nanosafety. We strongly believe that the benefits and risks of these new technologies must be properly communicated to the wider public.

Goal of the conference: To raise awareness about new safety concerns, specific to nano materials.

Language: The conference will be in English language. The participants should confirm their understanding of English in their individual registration forms.

Who should attend? Authorities, public institutions, NGOs, industry, scientists and other stakeholders interested in nano safety.  At the end of day 3, one participant from each country will be asked to give a short overview of the state of awareness about nano safety in his respective country.

Venue: Hotel Slon, Slovenska cesta 34, Ljubljana, Slovenia
